In India, the journey to becoming a doctor starts with clearing one of the most competitive entrance exams for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program.

MBBS Entrance Exams in India

As of my last update in April 2023, the primary national-level entrance exam for MBBS admissions in India is the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Here’s an overview of the MBBS entrance exam in India:

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)

Overview: NEET is the sole entrance test for admission to MBBS courses in India, replacing all state-level and individual medical college exams. It is mandatory for admission to government and private medical colleges in India, as well as for Indian students seeking medical education abroad.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Candidates must have completed or be appearing for their 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects.
  • The minimum age limit is 17 years as of December 31 of the year of admission.
  • The upper age limit, if applicable, and other specific eligibility criteria should be checked as they may be subject to change.
  • Candidates must have scored a minimum percentage in the qualifying examination (10+2), which varies for different categories.

Exam Pattern:

  • NEET is conducted once a year in a pen-and-paper mode.
  • The question paper consists of 180 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology).
  • The duration of the exam is 3 hours.
  • The exam is conducted in various languages, including English, Hindi, and other regional languages.

Application Process:

  • Candidates need to apply online through the official website of NTA NEET.
  • It’s important to keep track of the application window to ensure timely submission of the application form along with the requisite fee.

Selection Process:

  • Admission to MBBS courses is based on the rank obtained in NEET.
  • Candidates who qualify for NEET are required to participate in the counseling process conducted at the national level by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for All India Quota seats and at the state level for state quota seats.

Important Considerations:

  • NEET scores are also used for admission to other undergraduate medical courses such as BDS (Dental), AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy), and for admission to nursing courses.
  • The syllabus for NEET is based on the NCERT curriculum for classes 11 and 12.

State-Level Exams

Before NEET became the unified entrance test, several states conducted their own entrance exams for MBBS admissions. However, post-NEET, these have been discontinued, and NEET scores are now used for state quota seats as well.

AIIMS & JIPMER

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) used to conduct separate entrance exams for admission to their MBBS programs. However, from 2020 onwards, admissions to these institutes are also through NEET.

Conclusion

For aspiring medical students in India, clearing NEET is the key to unlocking the doors to MBBS courses across the country. Preparation for NEET requires a thorough understanding of the syllabus, consistent practice, and a strategic approach to mastering the vast curriculum. With NEET being the single entrance test for medical admissions, it has streamlined the process, making it essential for candidates to focus their efforts on excelling in this one exam.
